|2010 NSYA Annual Awards|
The Nova Scotia Yachting Association held the annual provincial sailing awards at a ceremony at the Saraguay Club in Halifax on Saturday, November 20.
Mike Evans from the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron was named Sailor of the Year. Evans won the 2010 edition of the Route Halifax St. Pierre Race and contributed greatly to offshore racing last year as he chaired the race as well.
Captain Eric Hill pictured left receiving award from Dave Dewolfe, NSYA Cruising Chair, was named Male Sailor of the Yearfor his efforts with the STV Tuna program. He certified Cruising Instructors on the vessel and skippered it to a number of outstanding results in races.
Lisa Ross of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron captured her 5th Female Sailor of the Year Award in the past 6 years after finishing in 17th place at the 2010 Laser Radial World Championships.
Capturing the Nova Scotia Youth Sailor Award were Henry Machum and Julien Fougere from RNSYS who won the National Youth Sailing Championships in the 420 Class. Both sailors are now preparing to qualify to represent Canada at the 2011 World Youth Sailing Championships.
Karen Filbee-Dexter and Dana Archibald were this year’s NSYA Legacy Fund award winner. The Fund is designed to help provide NS sailors with the advanced technical expertise they require from coaching to equipment acquisition, and to take them from a provincial level of competition to national and international levels.
It was established in 1994 in the memory of Paul Thomson.
Guy Tipton of the Shelburne Yacht Club is this year's recipient of the Nova Trophy Community Coach of the Year Award. In just over three years Guy has created a Learn to Sail program that has introduced sailing to a number of youth and young adults in the community and surrounding area.
The following youth athletes were awarded Merit Awards for excellence and dedication to the sport in 2010.
